HISTORY: The Miss America Pageant
celebrated her 90th birthday on ABC Television on
January 15th, 2011, crowning Teresa Scanlan, Miss
Nebraska as Miss America 2011!
Established in 1921 in Atlantic City, NJ, and what
began as “Beauty Pageant” designed to keep tourists at
the beach through Labor day, is now one of America’s
oldest traditions, almost as old as Coca Cola and
Baseball! In 1948, The Miss America Scholarship
Organization distinguished itself into becoming the
single largest scholarship source for young women in
the world, now awarding over $45,000,000 dollars at
the local, state, and national levels of competition!
For decades, little girls all over America have
continued to dream about one day becoming Miss
America. She is the exemplary role model! This
incredible leadership program prepares young women for
life focusing on the four points of the Miss America
Crown: Scholarship, Service, Success, and Style. This
American tradition and not for profit all volunteer
organization, remains strong due to the support of
incredible community businesses, local governments,
individuals, and their 300,000 volunteers nation-wide.
In 2005, The Miss America Pageant established their
little sister program: Miss America’s Outstanding Teen
and it is quickly becoming a powerful tool promoting
scholastic achievement, community involvement,
creative accomplishment, and healthy living among our
nation’s youth.

Former Miss Jeffersontown WinnersHISTORY: The Miss Jeffersontown Scholarship
Pageant became a part of the city of Jeffersontown’s
community fabric in the early 1960’s. Like hundreds of Miss
America locals across the country, in the early decades of
the pageant’s history, Miss Jeffersontown was sponsored by
the local chapter of the Jaycees. But beginning in 1992,
under the leadership of a volunteer group of ladies, the
City of Jeffersontown, along with several local businesses
and community individuals, have proudly served as event
sponsors, and investing over $100,000 of scholarships and
mentoring hours into these future young women leaders of our
community. This investment
has not come back void! One young woman by the name of
Heather French (Henry), on her ascent to working toward her
eventual title of Miss America 2000, served as Miss
Jeffersontown (Top 5 finish at Miss KY) during the 1997
Jeffersontown’s Bi-Centennial celebration. With
Jeffersontown’s rich, 200 year plus history and their motto
of “Small town values and enterprising spirit,” their
relationship with Miss America’s
values of Scholarship, Service, Success, and Style make the
two a great fit. Each young woman who’s walked across the
Miss Jeffersontown stage is a winner! Jeffersontown is very
proud of the 8 Miss Jeffersontown’s who’ve won the Miss
Kentucky crown, the 12 others who’ve made the finals, and 3
former Miss Jeffersontown’s who shortly
there-after went on to win the Miss Kentucky and/or Miss
America crown!
(As of 1995, winners would be named for the following year.
Example, pageant held in fall of 2009 crowns Winner for
2010.) From 1966-1974, the Jeffersontown Jaycees were the
official sponsors of the Miss Jeffersontown Scholarship
Organization. In 1995, it switched to the City of
Jeffersontown and many individual businesses and individuals
supporting this event.
